The Best In 80's Action Movies

By Martyv25

Everyone loves a good 80’s action movie. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Sylvester Stallone were the big stars of the day. These movies are the ones you can watch time and time again, no matter what mood you are in, the ultimate way to relax the movies required very little to think about and were there purely for your entertainment. I decided to come up with a list of my favourite 80’s action movies (in no particular order) and here they are for you below. Enjoy!

See all 4 photos

Commando (1985)

Probably the first Arnie movie I saw was Commando and I still watch it to this day if it’s on TV. Released in 1985 the movie starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as retired elite special forces commando John Matrix, his daughter is kidnapped by a ruthless dictator and Martix is given order to complete a job in order to get her back, of course as with any Arnie action movie he does not play by the rules, kills everyone who crossed him and get his daughter back the only way he knows how. There were a couple of mistakes in the editing, the scene where he drops Sullie off the cliff and drives his totalled Porsche away for one. The car is on its side and damaged beyond repair when Matrix tips it over,  then he gets in to drive it away and what do you know it’s a brand new Porsche. Also when Matrix storms the dictators Villa he shoots one of the guards on the roof, if your eyes are quick enough you will see the blue crash matt he lands on.

Die Hard (1988)

I love all of the Die Hard movies and the latest one was released a few years back now. For me though as with most movies the original is the best. For Die Hard that is when Bruce Willis goes up against Alan Rickman. Willis plays John Mclane a cop Mclane’s wife attends a work party and Hans Gruber shows up to hold everyone hostage. Not to long after Willis stages a one man fight back against 20 to 30 other guys all with high powered guns, as usual not one bullet hits him and he wreaks havoc through the office block killing everyone in his path to save his wife and everyone else. Willis now owns one of the best catchphrases in movie history because of Die Hard “Yippee Kaye Mutha F@*&”&!”.

The Terminator (1984)

Being the man of the moment back then Arnie gets the nod once again here for his role as Terminator. Arnie plays a cyborg sent back through time to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) as her future son is to be the leader of the Human resistance against the machines. This movie was a classic but for me Terminator 2 Judgment Day was better, well maybe not better but I enjoyed it more. A third addition was added to the franchise with Arnie once again plated the good guy and the latest addition Terminator Salvation starring Christian Bale. Another great tagline for Arnie this time “I’ll be back”.

Lethal Weapon (1987)

Everyone’s favourite cops starring Mel Gibson and Danny Glover this movie was great. The pair play cops Murtaugh and Riggs an unlikely pair of a cop who sticks by the rules and another who totally disobeys them. They uncover a big drug smuggling operation and learn fast that they operate much better as a team than they do alone, a great action movie which will give you a bit of a laugh too. Apparently Lethal Weapon 5 is due out next year with both Glover and Willis signed up.

Lethal Weapon: The Complete Series
Amazon Price: $19.36
List Price: $52.98

First Blood (1982)

Written and starred in by Sylvester Stallone he plays a Vietnam war veteran John Rambo, left troubled by the things he has seen in his life, he returns to his home town where the local Police chief takes a instant dislike to him, Rambo goes on the run in the local forest with every cop in town looking for him, he single handily takes down the entire force writing a few wrongs along the way. The whole series of these movies were great but Fist Blood is the best for me, the latest one Rambo is a bit of a blood fest.

Well there you have my five movies, I hope you enjoyed the read and thanks for dropping by.

Those are pretty good choices, but you left out some that I think are as good as or better than some on your list:

Aliens, Road Warrior, Predator, Robocop

Great list Marty...takes me back to my glory days in the 1980s, Commando has lots of mistakes in the movie...I remember the end when there were lots of explosions, you could tell some of the soldiers were cardboard standups....you gotta love it

Why does the Terminator poster say "Terminator 1", isn't the movie called "The Terminator"? I don't think they were planning on a second one, so why would they call it Terminator 1?

Is Willis really going to be in Lethal Weapon 5, or did you mean Gibson?

I think top action movie of the 80's is a close call between Die Hard and Terminator, but I would put Road Warrior as 3rd, followed by Lethal Weapon 4th.

I almost mentioned Bloodsport too. Although I don't think it is all that great a movie, I can't help but watch it when it is on TV.

Does the The Untouchables counts as an action movie? That was made in 1987, and has a sizable bodycount, but might have too much talk to count as an action movie.

Hey thanks Ruben, we seem to be up at the same time of day/night for a change. Untouchables would probably fall into the gangster remit for me, maybe thats given me another idea, huummm! I'm looking at my DVD collection now.

Bloodsport was a great movie and I love Van Damme, I had to go and look up what Road Warriors was, had not heard of it! IMDB is great of course I had heard of it just not referred to as anything other than Mad Max with a very Australian Mel Gibson. I have never actually seen the movie myself.

Ruben 14 months ago

I think "Road Warrior" was the name they called it in America. Maybe you know it as Mad Max 2. I didn't think the 1st or 3rd Mad Max movies were very good, but the 2nd one is. If you have a problem with it sounding too Australian, try to get one of the early American releases of the movie, because they dubbed the voices to make them sound more American. They probably changed it back in later releases.

I love the fights in Bloodsport, but am not very pleased with the boring filler between fights.

I just saw a show where they rated the top 5 of all time in many movie categories. The winner for greatest action movie of all time was a film made in the 80's, but nobody even mentioned it here yet. Any guesses?

The only other 80's movie in the top 5 action films of all time was "Die Hard" in fourh place.

Hey Ruben, I can't guess off the top of my head especially at this time of night or morning as it is here. Please tell me it did not star Chuck Norris, a friend of mine is in the Army and has worked with US army, apparently you guys love Chuck.

Ruben 14 months ago

I don't think Chuck Norris has ever been extremely popular here, but enough people like him to keep him wealthy. The only good movie I can think of with him in it is the Bruce Lee film "Way of the Dragon" (aka "Return of the Dragon").

You should think more about the #1 action movie of all time. I googled various lists, and this movie is #1 of all time in 4 of the 5 lists I looked at (#3) in the other. Those lists also confirm what I said above about Road Warrior and Aliens.

Great list and hub! I'm a huge movie fan and love movie lists..it makes for great Friday night pizza conversation. I'm a big "Die Hard" fan; it's a film I've watched over and over. You've got all the big guys here: Stallone, Willis, and, of course, Ah-nuld. They made the action movie what it is today--which is what made "The Expendables" good fun. Great list.

Ah-nuld, love it! will have to remember that one. Thanks for the comment. I loved the Expendables went down in my list of best 2010 movies. If you love movies you should take a look over at my blog, the link is on my profile page. It is still a work in progress though, well I'm off to watch Limitless now so will be posting my review over at the blog address either tonight or tommorow, lets just see how much alcohol I get through between now and then LOL.

Die Hard is a action movie classic. I don't think it can ever be topped, but I really like Die Hard: With a Vengeance.
