Best Classic Movies
66I was sitting thinking over the Christmas period about movies which I used to love to watch when I was younger. I managed to come up with what I think were some great movies and ones that I have not seen for years. These are probably not the greatest movies but I enjoyed them as a youngster and maybe you did to.
Ok so the first one I thought about was this,
Flight of the Navigator (1986)
I loved watching this movie but could never really understand what was happening. The story is about a boy David who gets onto a space craft which is run by a computer called Max. Max is able to communicate with David and takes him on an adventure through time, I think that is what confused me most I never really knew where they were in time. Of course by the end of the movie I know that David got home back to the right day and time it was just in between that I could not quite follow. I would love to sit and watch this movie again now but have not seen it on television for a long time.
Project X (1987)
Again a movie I have not seen for years, the movie stars Matthew Broderick and Helen hunt and is based mainly on Broderick who joins the military and is given the responsibility of looking after some chimpanzees which are used in various experiments on a program called “Project X”. Broderick of course takes dislike to this and become close to one of the chimps Virgil who he learns to communicate with via sign language. Broderick and Hunt then go all out to ensure the safety of the chimps getting them away from the project.
The Goonies (1985)
This movie was great and I am sure that most if not all of you will have seen it. The movie is based on a bunch of kids who come across a treasure map and go on a wild adventure in order to find the treasure only to be followed by a family of crooks out to steal their gold. Great laughs and one liners Chunk is great with his “truffle shuffle”. If you have not seen this movie then you need to its great fun.
The Truffle Shuffle
Why not take a look at some of my other Hubs
The NeverEnding Storey (1984)
I did like this movie and watched it a few times, this was a little like flight of the navigator for me not that the character Bastian travels through time he is transported into a book to a fantasy world called Fantasia. Bastian soon finds that he is playing a part in the book and is attempting to save Fantasia from destruction. I have not seen this movie for a long, long time and have also not seen it on television for a few years.
Short Circuit (1986)
This one has to go in “Johnny five is alive” yes everyone favourite experimental military robot who following being electrocuted becomes intelligent. Number 5 as he was known in the military now does not want to return as he knows he will be reprogrammed back to what he should be, so then starts the fun of Johnny five and his accomplice evading capture from the military, a great family movie that you can watch and laugh at time and time again.

short circuit is a great movie...I actually went back and watched planet of the apes originals but they did not have the same appeal...
Neverending story is a great fantasy movie for Kids! I remember watching it when I was young
The NeverEnding Story was actually on television last Saturday afternoon Marty. You were probably watching/listening to the football. I managed to catch the last thirty seconds, just in time to see the bullies get their comeuppance in the wheelie bin and Bastian on the giant dog fly over the building. Cue Limahl. I think the soundtrack and ending to that film has to be up there with Cyndi Lauper and The Goonies for generating emotive 80's movie nostalgia.
I think you nailed this list. Project X is the only one I don't remember watching. Flight of the Navigator is awesome. Applying Einstein's Theory of Relativity to the premise of a kid's film is genius. Again, I love the soundtrack. Flight of the Navigator rekindles so many fond memories for me, as do The NeverEnding Story, The Goonies and Short Circuit. Last time I checked (about two months ago), the entire Flight of the Navigator was on Youtube.
One film that you missed that I would have included - Explorers (1985).

Thanks for posting this. I grew up with these films, and actually have watched all of them in the past few months! Did you know they are remaking The Neverending Story? I don't think the new version will capture what made this one so great.
