British Stand Up Comedians

By Martyv25

I was sitting the other night clicking through YouTube having a laugh at my favourite comedian which gave me the boost I needed to give this hub a go. Stand up comedy is not an easy game and I take off my hat to anyone who is able to do it. Stand up is something that has really just started to take off again especially in England, I would put that down largely to the acts who are currently the circuit here.

For years now we have had the same with Lee Evans, funny yes! but not for me then you have the other end of the scale Roy Chubby Brown, again funny but a little to blue in his humour to be main stream.

The British comedy scene is really doing well at the moment thanks largely to the people I will mention below. Enjoy!

John Bishop Live At The Apollo

John Bishop

The Liverpool funny man started his stand up career in 2000 after he went through to the final of the major new act competition of So You Think You're Funny. Since then John has been a regular on the comedy tour and appearing at all the big venues and as a panalist on TV comedy shows. He has also recently got a Saturday night prime time slot on the BBC with John Bishops Britan.

Rhod Gilbert Live At The Apollo

Rhod Gilbert

The Welshman turned to proffesional comedy in 2002 after taking part in a coomedy workshop. Everything that Rhod talks about is in everyday life and his frantic yet organised way of putting it over makes it all the more hilarious. Gilbert was a regular on the comedy tour and now due to his popularity has his own tour, recently finishing Rhod Gilbert and the Cat that looked like Nicholas Lyndhurst.

Sarah Millican Live At The Apollo

Sarah Millican

The Geordie lass had not even been into a comedy club until she turned to comedy when she was 29. in 2008 Millican won the best newcomer award. Most of her material is based aound her ex husband, current boyfriend and her friends.

Kevin Bridges Live At The Apollo

Kevin Bridges

Kevin Bridges is a 24 year old Glaswegian who started performing stand up comedy at the age of 17 and at the age of 18 he got to the final of So You Think You're Funny. Bridges is a regular on the comedy circuit and tells a great tale about life growing up in Glasgow. No doubt he will be on the comedy scene for a long time.

Peter Kay Live In Manchester

Peter Kay

Peter Kay has of course got to be mentioned in a list of British Comedians, for me Kay is the man who kicked it all off for the scene over here really bringing stand up back to notice. I am sure that everyone has heard of Peter Kay so no need for the background. Peter's tours are sold out within days and he also works in television writing, acting and production, he really has been the man for the upcoming comedians to follow.

Well there you have it my 5 favourite comedians at the moment, hope you enjoyed the hub maybe you have some ideas on it who should be in or out.

Hi Marty, I live in Melbourne now so i haven't heard of most of these comics. I have seen Chubby Brown twice here in Melbourne and i was surprised at how slick he was. He was disgusting too but 40% of the audience were female. I've also seen my all time favourite Billy Connally twice here in Mel'. Many years ago I went to the Mel' comedy festival to see a new comic, Frank Skinner. I thought he was very good, slick, interesting and most of his jokes were about Mel' and Aussie stuff. I read his book a while back and he writes his act as he goes along, on a weekly basis. A great discipline i would imagine. I know he's not brilliant like some other comics, but i enjoyed his act. I'll have a listen to the comedy when my daughter has got up. (Night shift) as i don't have access to the head phones. Cheers mate can't fail with this material.

Thank you for the great laughs. You included some awesome videos for our viewing pleasure. In my opinion, a very good stand-up comedian is hard to find. There are many mediocre ones out there. It is difficult to deliver laughs in front of a live audience.

Best wishes to you as you continue to attack the HubChallenge!!
